First Days of School

Tuesday, August 24th: Madeline's first day of school.

Madeline and Mallory started back to school. Madeline is now in 2nd grade and Mallory is in kindergarten. Both girls were really excited to start school. Madeline was initially disappointed that she didn't get the teacher she wanted. She got the boy teacher. However, her disappointment was quickly replaced by elation when she found out that her best friend was in her class. (And, as far as her teacher is concerned, we've heard lots of nice things about him.)

Mallory was also disappointed that she didn't get the teacher she wanted. She was also sad to find out that her best friend was not in her class. However, she quickly came around. Mallory's teacher made such an impression on her at Meet the Teacher day that she told me that she was going to name one of her children after her! She didn't know her first name, so she is planning to name the child "Louis" (for Ms. Louis.)

Now, technically Tuesday was Mallory's first day of school, however she only attended for 30 minutes and I was with her. The teacher told us about the ins and outs of kindergarten and then read the The Kissing Hand to the kids.

Wednesday, August 25th: Mallory's first (second) day of school

So, Wednesday was really Mallory's first day of school. She was sooooo excited. She told me that she was really excited and a little bit nervous. However, the nerves obviously disappeared once we got to school, because she almost ran in without even saying goodbye to me. I had to call her back for a hug and a kiss!

The first week went really well. Mallory bounces into school and bounces out. She just loves it. Although she goes full days, she says it's not long enough. She loves her teacher and she's made some new friends. I asked her if she's a good girl at school and she replied that Ms. Louis has never had to say, "Shh... Mallory."

The really big news is that Mallory got to each hot lunch on Friday! Now, I know hot lunch may not seem like a big deal, but to Mallory it was HUGE! Before school started, I printed out the lunch menu and Madeline and Mallory sat down with it and circled all the days that they wanted to eat hot lunch. Mallory circled every day! She was very sad when Ms. Louis said she'd like the kindergartners to bring a lunch from home for the first 2 weeks - month. (She just felt it was easier for them.) Mallory, on the other hand, was hoping to eat hot lunch on Tuesday - the day she was only there for 30 minutes! Anyway, I sent Mallory with a cold lunch on Wednesday and Thursday, but then, after getting the OK from her teacher, let her eat hot lunch on Friday. She was thrilled. She came bouncing out of school and told me all about the huge piece of pizza she got for lunch. She even ate some broccoli!

Madeline has settled in nicely to her class. She has started reading the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. She really likes her teacher and has made some new friends. She's not quite as bouncy as Mallory, but I attribute that to the fact that she's is in 2nd grade now - she has more of a "been there, done that" attitude.

In the days leading up to the first day of school, Madeline and Mallory spent a lot of time talking about school. When they were getting along well, Madeline would tell Mallory that she would walk her to class and wave to her in the hallways. When they were fighting, she'd say that she was NOT going to walk her to class and she was NOT going to wave to her in the hallways. For the record, Madeline has walked in with Mallory everyday.

Brianna is not going to school this year. If you ask her who her teacher is, she'll say, "My teacher is Mommy." I think she is enjoying being the only child at home. After we drop the girls off at school, she always happily remarks that "we are alone." She has been spending a lot of time playing Barbies and Polly Pockets. She finally gets to play the way she wants to, without being under the watchful eyes of Madeline and Mallory. When they're home, they only let her play with two Polly Pockets and they give her the clothes they don't want. Sure, she has accidentally decapitated several Polly Pockets , but I fixed them! Brianna is signed up for a class at the community center and storytime at the library. I think it's going to be a good year for all my girls.
